ZAiKS and BIEM

BIEM (International Office of Associations for Managing Recording and Mechanical Reproduction Rights) is the CISAC counterpart in relation to mechanical rights. ZAiKS has been a long-term member of BIEM, which is an international organization based in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France. BIEM was founded in 1929 by Alfons Tournier to manage rights to recordings and mechanical reproduction. Currently, BIEM gathers 61 societies from 58 countries.

BIEM focuses on improving protection in the field of mechanical rights, negotiating and unifying license agreements, as well as on developing the general terms of using copyright, together with the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry - IFPI. Other tasks of BIEM include securing technical cooperation between associations and helping with challenges such as securing greater profit from private copying for authors and copyright owners that result from online and offline exploitation of mechanical records.
